The waters of the Gulf of Maine are home to a diversity of sharks and other marine fish, many of which we regularly encounter while searching for whales. From massive basking sharks that to sleek blue sharks and short-finned makos, these animals are always a highlight of our trips and especially exciting for younger passengers. Rarer but increasingly common visitors like great white sharks reflect changing ocean conditions and growing seal populations, while unusual species such as the ocean sunfish never fail to spark curiosity. Schools of Atlantic bluefin tuna often churn the surface in displays of speed and power, and smaller but critically important fish like American sand lance form the foundation of the local food web.
